We got together with our friends at Batch to brew the perfect beer for drinking in a patch of sunshine on the seawall: a crushable lager lightly dry-hopped with Saaz, Mouteka, and Spalter Select.
Batch has strong ties to the local music scene, so we decided to make a donation. Proceeds from this beer will benefit the Saint James Music Academy.
Founded in 2007, the Saint James Music Academy (SJMA) is an independent non-profit organization providing free classical music education to children in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside in a safe after-school setting. The SJMA began in 2007 and since that time has provided free music education to hundreds of young people who otherwise would not have access to music. In addition to offering Choir and Orchestra classes, SJMA also provides nutrition, transportation, music therapy, scholarships, and amazing performance opportunities. SJMA is the product of many individuals, families, and businesses who share their belief in the power of music to change lives.
Batch opened in 2022 along the seawall at The Plaza of Nations and has quickly cemented itself as a community hub both in the neighborhood and in Vancouver’s local music scene. Patrons and passersby are treated to a regular schedule of talented local musicians, filling what was once an empty square awaiting redevelopment with good vibes, good tunes and a well-curated selection of local craft beer and wine.
The artwork for Rise Up was created and donated by New Westminster-based artist Tony Durke. After crafting an initial drawing, the artist carves each piece by hand from recycled wood, finishing it with oil paints. Tony Durke draws his inspiration from memory, music, and world events, crafting pieces that express love and frustration with modern life.
